Classroom Notes

It’s been another busy and productive week in the world of Team 20.  We wore our Team 20 t-shirts on Monday, creating a sea of blue in the room, down the hallways, and around the school.  A bit thank you to parent helpers!  More layers were added to language and math workshops this week.  New projects were born while others continue.  While prior Classroom Notes have focused on the “what” and “how” of the classroom, this week focuses on “nuts and bolts.”

Science Camp – Please fill out the short Science Camp questionnaire at if you haven’t already done so. The fifth grade team needs to know how much fundraising is necessary.  Science Camp Facebook – A Facebook community page titled “Lewis 5th Grade Science Camp Parents” is being set up.  Kamela Cook (Solomon's mom) is the page administrator and will accept your "join" requests as soon as possible after you submit them. You may contact Kamela at 503-750-0508 or

Volunteering During Reed Science – Reed Science has begun!  During Reed Science, three Reed College students take the lead in teaching the kids of Team 20 through a variety of hands on, inquiry-based experiences in science.  If you would like to volunteer during Reed Science on Thursday afternoons from 12:45 to 1:40, that would be great!  Please send me an email ( or return the bottom section of the memo that was sent home Tuesday.

Field Trip to Bonneville Dam – Team 20 and all fifth grades will be off to the Bonneville Dam on Monday, October 27th.  This trip was originally scheduled for the kids when they were in fourth grade, but was cancelled due to the government shutdown.  Please look for information in your kid’s binder today.  Please join us!  Volunteers are welcome!  We will be leaving at 9:00 and returning at 2:30.  Parents may need to carpool, depending on bus space.

Homework – We changed our take home system this week from the green folder to the new and improved binder complete with subject tabs.  The binder includes a Homework Helper in the front section, which highlights the evening’s homework.  Currently for language, kids are reading at least 30 minutes each night, practicing spelling (the packet is due each Friday morning and tested each Friday afternoon), and working on a Summer Episode personal narrative, which is due next Monday.  Kids brought their Google Apps username and password home on Monday.  They are able to access their Google Docs and Google Drive from any computer…a nice feature of Chromebooks!  For math, a Home Connection is sent home about twice each week and due the next day in connection with our current math learning.  For social studies, kids are learning state locations and capitals.  Their maps are due on Thursday.  Most are finished or finishing.  A quiz of the West region states and capitals is Friday.  The kids are well prepared!  We have been talking about study strategies.  Kids have been using the State and Capitals page on our blog.  Also, here are spelling strategies and multiplication strategies that we have been working on.
