Classroom Notes

Greetings!

We have had another busy and productive week in room 20.  Here’s your update!

Outdoor Classroom: Having used our visits to the garden, some flowers in our classroom, and conversations about the chickadees at our feeder to study form and function, the kids extended this by making some very creative eco-critters from craft materials like wiggly eyes, pipe cleaners, felt, cotton balls, paper clips, yarn, and more.  Kids are writing essays to explain how their eco-critter’s different forms fit its function in its ecosystem for an upcoming exhibit in the Reed College Biology Building.

Bike Safety:  Safe Routes to Schools (http://goo.gl/DJMFSy) will lead a bike safety course from 11/12 to 11/21 during the school day for all fifth grades.  We will be outside most days, so please be sure that your kid is prepare to bike in any weather.  This means having a jacket, raincoat, gloves, etc.  Helmets and bikes are provided.  Please return the activity release, if you have not yet done so.

OMSI Field Trip:  We will be taking the Tri-Met bus to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry on Tuesday 11/25.  Please return the field trip form by Friday, if you have not already done so.

Volunteer Opportunity:  We have a field trip planned for Thursday, 12/11.  We will walk to Reed College to visit Cooley Gallery.  Reed’s Outreach Coordinator, Gregory MacNaughton, has invited us to attend the current exhibit of works by French artists from the Supports/Surfaces movement.  Parents/family are welcome to join us for this walking field trip.  We will leave Lewis at 9:00 and return around 11:30.  Please email me if you are interested in joining.  More info on the exhibit: http://www.reed.edu/gallery/

Health Update:  There are some lice going around Lewis School.  Please check your kid’s head carefully for lice EVERY EVENING.  Lice are hard to see and sometimes you may not notice them.  Please do this for the next few weeks.  More info on what to do if you find lice is on our blog: http://goo.gl/BkM0UP.

Lewis Singing Club:  The Lewis Singing Club is looking for 4th and 5th graders who love to sing. Mr. Colvin says, “A great voice is not required, only the desire to sing!”  The first day will be Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7:45 a.m. in Room 24.  Please sign up at goo.gl/tou32x.

Thanks,
Mark
