Classroom Notes

Greetings,

We had a brief and busy last week.  I do not think that I have ever experienced a Wednesday/Friday week before!  Here’s your update.

Photos From Our Week:  Each week, two kids are team photographers.  They take photos during the course of each day to document the life of Team 20.  I take photos, too, with my camera.  At the end of the week, these photos are posted on our blog as “photos from our week.”  This week’s team photographers were Sadie and Phil.  Here’s a link to this week’s photos: http://goo.gl/m3fVh1  I will use this week’s Classroom Notes to give a summary of these photos.

This week, we met with our reading buddies in Mrs. Logue’s first grade.  Each Team 20 kid brought a book to share with their buddy and each first grade buddy had a favorite book ready, too.  There was some super expressive reading going on!  Kids are writing and conferencing on their Eco-Critter Essay planning webs and beginning rough drafts on the Chromebooks.  These expository essays explain how their eco-critter’s forms fit their function in the ecosystem.  More info on our upcoming exhibit in the Reed College Biology Building is below.  During Bike Safety, kids discussed the importance of visibility, predictability, and following the laws.  After playing some communication games to prepare for riding, kids met their helmets and bikes.  They checked their bike’s ABCs (air pressure, brakes, chain, and seat height), and followed our instructor, Emily, on a winding line along the playground blacktop.  Many thanks to those indicating on the activity release that they could volunteer for Bike Safety next week.  Emily should be contacting you soon.  As a Bike Safety capstone, we will bike from Lewis to Woodstock Park from 8:45 to 10:45 on Friday.   We were in the audience for a drama performance by Mr. Colvin and Ms. Sarah’s kids on Friday morning.  Team 20 will have drama class beginning in January.

Eco-Critters Exhibit at Reed College:  On Thursday, December 4th, we will be walking to the Biology Building at Reed College.  There we will serve as tour guides at our Eco-Critters Exhibit for Reed College science students.  Parents/family are welcome to join us for this trip.  We will leave Lewis at 9:45 and return at around 11:30.  If you would like to join, please send me an email (mrichner@pps.net).

Eco-Critters Exhibit Installation:  I will meet up with Reed College science instructor, Kristy Gonyer, on December 2nd at 3:30 in the Reed College Biology Building to install our Eco-Critters Exhibit.  If you and your kid would like to help with installation, you would be more than welcome.  Please send me an email (mrichner@pps.net).

Please follow us on Twitter @LewisRoom20 and at LewisRoom20.blogspot.com for regular updates and photos!

Thanks,
Mark
