Classroom Notes

Team 20 began a Recording Books Project this week.  Kids will record their books in partner on a Chromebook and then edit the file using GarageBand with Mr. Jamesbarry in technology class.  Then CDs will be burned and be paired with the picture books to be read at the listening center by our first grade buddies in Mrs. Logue's class.  Kids are preparing by reading aloud with their audience in mind while attending to a set of standards that they defined themselves: 1) reading with clear voices that have a good volume and speed and 2) reading with enthusiasm and expression for characters and the narrator.  Nearing the publishing phase, we talked as a class about the need to pause to turn the pages and make a "turn the page signal."  I said that we could click a stapler to make the signal.  Then kids said, "We can do that in GarageBand!"  I felt very analog in my thinking at that moment!  It's good that we are discussing our plan for this project as it unfolds.

Also this week, kids shared winter vacation essays, met with reading buddies in Mrs. Logue’s first grade, worked in small groups during social studies, and worked with the properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, measuring how many degrees are in the interior of any triangle (180) and a quadrilateral (360) with a protractor.  Kids are practicing Typing Club (lewis.typingclub.com) and catching up on current events with Newsela (newsela.com), both of which are accessible from any computer with their Google Account.

In other Lewis School news…

Kids are practicing drama with Michael and Danielle each morning in preparation for their February 5th performance.  On that day, please have kids to Lewis by 6:00 p.m. for the 6:30 p.m. show.  Everyone is welcome!  Here's a letter that was sent home with kids last Friday from the instructors with more details: goo.gl/m2eIPo

Ms. Rotwein is leading a dance class in her room on Fridays at 4:00 p.m.  Here’s sign-up information: goo.gl/L67o4o

Thank you to families for a great turn out and for coordinating the pasta dinner fundraiser for fifth grade science camp.   The next fundraiser features the Lonesome Teacher Trio for the Lewis Family Dance on February 20th beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Lastly, we could use any donations of old magazines to be cut apart and used for a writing activity in room 20.
