Classroom Notes

First and foremost, Team 20’s drama performance led by Michael and Danielle will be this Thursday, February 5th.  On that day, all kids will need to be at Lewis at 6:00 p.m. for the 6:30 p.m. performance.  Everyone is welcome!  Here's more info: goo.gl/qrPt2V.

Having practiced reading with expression with their partner, kids recorded books on their Chromebooks for our Recording Books Project.  The next step is to edit the audio file in GarageBand with Mr. Jamesbarry in technology class.  We will give the CDs and books to our first grade reading buddies in Mrs. Logue’s class for their listening center.  Also, our Poetry Project is off the bulletin board near the cafeteria and up on our blog: goo.gl/r5xjZ2

We continue working with angles and measurement during math.  We are revisiting multiplication facts.  We took a multiplication fact fluency test last week.  Many kids need to work on memorizing these facts.  To be fluent means that you can answer a problem like 6 x 8 in one second.  Please check in with your kid to see if they need continued practice at home.  We will retake this fluency test in two weeks to look for growth from continued practice.

In social studies, most groups fared well during their ocean voyage during our simulation focusing on the early colonization of North America.  Much of the learning for this activity has centered on conversations about how standards for communication, cooperation, and participation change in different social environments.  Small group work is complicated and kids are learning what it takes to work well together.

For read aloud, we finished Shiloh.  Marty finally got his beloved dog and came to understand mean ol' Judd Travers in a new light.  "Nothing is as simple as you guess."

Looking ahead…Report cards will be sent home this Friday.  Please sign and return your kid’s report card envelope on Monday.  Also, a pink flyer about Valentine ’s Day was sent home last Wednesday.
