Classroom Notes

Greetings!

It was great to see so many of you at Open House.  Thank you for coming out.  The kids were excellent tour guides!  We had another outstanding week in room 20.  It was only the second week of school and the first week that we were able to run a more regular schedule.  Each day I have been adding new “layers” of activities.  This week saw the beginnings of language and math workshops added to the routine.  I should take some time to explain several aspects of the workshop format.

Language Workshop:  Monday’s routine includes several different activities.   Kids tell stories about their weekends.  This is one of the many ways we practice our communication skills.  Also during language workshop this week, kids worked on their Summer Episode personal narrative, using their plans to write a rough draft on their personal Chromebook.  Kids are also working on alphabet posters for the walls and have 40 minutes of SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) during which they read independently each afternoon.  Kids are into books during SSR.  My goal for them right now is to find books that they are interested in for independent reading time each day.  We have a pretty good classroom library to pull from.  We began reading Shiloh, by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Ask your kid about mean ol' Judd Travers.

Math:  For math this week, I am sending home a great math game – Tic Tac Toe Sums.  This is a fun way to practice math facts and to think strategically.  The sheet went home with kids on Tuesday and is due on Friday, September 18th.

Outdoor Classroom:  This week, we were able to spend some time in the garden doing what we are calling Outdoor Classroom.  This outdoor learning component helps set the context for science learning for the year as we use observation to collect data.  Our conversations have been about how community is made of built and natural environments and the garden is a combination of both.

School Pictures Update from the Lewis Office:  On September 20th, pictures will be available for viewing on the 3 Like Minds Photography website.  Follow the Lewis link to view your kid’s picture.  Then complete the paper order form, attach payment (cash or check only), and return in to your kid’s classroom teacher.   The final day to turn in orders is October 8th.  Order forms were sent home in the Back-to-School Packets and are available in the Lewis office and on the Lewis website.

In other news, we will make Team T-Shirts this Friday.  If you are free from 12:30 to 1:30 to help kids with shirt making, you are more than welcome to join us.  Just drop me an email or send a note.  Today was our first library day with Ms. Tori.  Books will be due every Wednesday.  Last, but not least, Reed Science will begin next month.  An introduction letter with a photo release came home with kids today.  Please return the release by Friday, September 25th.

Please follow us on Twitter @LewisRoom20 and at LewisRoom20.blogspot.com for regular updates and photos!
