Classroom Notes

Greetings…and Happy New Year!

It has been some time since I have written. What a wintery month we have had! Team 20 returned from winter break well rested and ready to go. The kids were all smiles (most of them anyway) and filled with stories from winter vacation. As a matter of fact, we spent most of our first morning back together sharing stories using a creative dramatics activity called “freeze frame.” My stories were mainly about enjoying lots of play time with Norah Lee and Twyla. They loved being pulled through the snow on a sled! All in all, the kids did an excellent job settling into routines during the week and, to no one’s surprise, it turned out to be a very busy and productive week!

This past couple of weeks had several beginnings. Kids began planning a reply letter to their pen pals at Marquette Elementary School in Madison, Wisconsin. They also began designing new name cards for near our door in the hallway, choosing and laying out their chosen font.

I began reading The Watsons Go To Birmingham – 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis to the kids. Kids were out in the chilly Lewis garden with Ms. Kathleen learning about native Oregon plants.

Oregon Travel Brochures are now finished. Kids made a virtual field trip using Google Street View to share a visual example from their region with their group during our Regions of Oregon Round Table Conference last Friday.

We had our annual read-a-thon on the prior Friday. We also met that day with our reading buddies in Mrs. Logue’s first grade to teach them how to use the Read Along Books that we made for them. And, in general, it is safe to say that we are back in full stride!
