Classroom Notes

Greetings!

Standardized state testing is on the horizon. These tests, called the Smarter Balanced tests, are very different from the former OAKS tests in their size and scope. A state testing opt-out form is available in the Lewis office. New this year is that if families choose to opt-out of state testing, they must submit this form to the Lewis office before actual testing begins. The statewide testing window for the Smarter Balanced tests is February 7 to June 9. Lewis plans to schedule tests to begin in April and end by June 2nd. The district states that teachers can neither promote nor discourage participation in state testing; that opting out is a parent decision. However, if you have any questions about the tests, please do not hesitate to ask.

We have had another busy and productive week in room 20. During language, are writing Photo Stories, which are creative writing stories sparked by a photo. During math, kids have been working with fractions. Art with Ms. Gina, Lewis’s art resident, continues. Kids are learning about value and made value cones and value robots, which are on display in our hallway. Reed Science is back for a new semester. Kids are learning about the water cycle and experimented with clouds in jars and changing a variable in the experiment with their lab group.

Signs were completed this week in preparation for next week’s Project Second Wind food drive to benefit Oregon Food Bank. We also met up with our buddies in Mrs. Logue’s first grade to make posters to advertise the food drive, which runs from February 27th to March 3rd. Here is more information about the food drive, including a list of most wanted foods. Thanks for the boxes you have sent in for use as collection boxes in each classroom. We could still use more, so if you have any extra boxes that would be suitable on hand, please send them in.

In book news, we are continuing The Watsons Go to Birmingham –1963. As the Watson family makes their drive south, we listened to a podcast from 99% Invisible about The Green Book. Also, Read Across America will be celebrated at Lewis on Thursday, March 3rd. Family is welcome to stop by and join in some reading from 12:45 to 1:15.

Please follow us on Twitter @LewisRoom20 and at LewisRoom20.blogspot.com for photos and regular updates!
