Classroom Notes

Lewis Elementary School’s food drive called Project Second Wind continues through Friday the 3rd. Team 20’s colored pencil and watercolor signs are next to every door in the school to get the word out as are posters that we made with our first grade buddies. Here’s more info about Oregon Food Bank’s most wanted foods and a public service announcement about the food drive made by Team 20.

I am including this repeat from last week’s Classroom Notes to be sure that all families are aware that standardized state testing is on the horizon. These tests, called the Smarter Balanced tests, are very different from the former OAKS tests in their size and scope. A state testing opt-out form is available in the Lewis office. New this year is that if families choose to opt-out of state testing, they must submit this form to the Lewis office before actual testing begins. The statewide testing window for the Smarter Balanced tests is February 7 to June 9. Lewis plans to schedule tests to begin in April and end by June 2nd. The district states that teachers can neither promote nor discourage participation in state testing; that opting out is a parent decision. However, if you have any questions about the tests, please do not hesitate to ask.
