Classroom Notes

Team 20 has had another very productive and busy week. Our art residency with Nancy Judd of Recycle Runway concluded. Kids shared their upcycled fashions through a museum tour, read their group’s artist statement, and had a go with some creative dramatics to reflect on the life cycle of clothing. Finished pieces and artist statements are on our blog.

We are continuing to learn about Native American history. We connected to last fall’s salmon study by learning about how the construction of dams impacted salmon and the spiritual, cultural, and economic way of life for Native Americans living near Celilo Falls and elsewhere along the Columbia River. We were treated to a film screening of United by Water with director/filmmaker, Derrick LaMere. The film tells the story of five tribes returning to the Kettle Falls area where they had traditionally gathered to fish prior to the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam 75 years ago.

During Language Workshop, kids are truckin’ along on reply letters to our pen pals in Madison, Wisconsin, editing and revising letters in partner and with me. Our Black History biographies are completed and are on display as a Black History timeline in the hallway.

Looking ahead, we will celebrate Valentine’s Day in the classroom on Wednesday, February 14th. As was mentioned in last week’s pink flyer, we will make Valentine “mail boxes.” Paper, ribbon, markers and other art supplies will be on hand, and if kids wanted to bring a shoebox, cereal box, or other “construction aids,” they certainly may. Please be sure to include Patrice, a new student in our room, on your Valentine’s list.

Please continue to send kids with a water bottle from home each day. We have one drinking fountain that is shared by the five classrooms at our end of the building. I want kids to have access to water throughout the day and a water bottle is a big help.

Last, but not least, report cards went home this past Monday. Please sign and return your kid’s report card envelope by the following Monday.
